  SPECIAL PROJECTS

Home Based Education
Based on the need of the their community, the Karwan center from the WIG project offered ACS a qualified teacher to teach the community's girls, all of whom still do not have the permission to attend public schools. With the assistance of ACS, 30 young girls are now attending daily classes at the private home of one of our income generation project participant. The enthusiasm of the girls is shown in wanting to attend school even on the weekend! Additionally, school supplies have been collected in Maryland and other parts of the USA and distributed to schools in Kandahar and Uruzgan provinces.

Health Initiative
ACS is currently assisting with raising funds and awareness for a Newborn Resuscitation Training program for mid-wives, doctors and nurses. This training could result in reviving over 100,000 newborns annually. We are also initiating a nutritional education program primarily for girls and women along with vitamin distribution. Our initial program will include the women in our WIG program. The majority of birth defects and maternal deaths resulting from childbirth are a result of micro-nutrient deficiency.

Public Policy
“Da Uruzgon da Aman aw Islah Shura”
Uruzgon Provincial Shura for Security and Reform
Uruzgon is one of the most deprived provinces in Afghanistan. Because of its active connections with the previous toppled regime, the common people are suffering as a result. With support from NED, ACS with representation from all districts, facilitated the first ever Provincial Shura for Uruzgon. The goal of this Shura is to work on development and human rights issues.
